The Battery Conservancy invited professionals to design an iconic moveable outdoor seat for The Battery, the 25-acre park at the tip of Manhattan.
My initial idea for what I call The Battery Bag came from a solemn attraction to the sculptural mounds of garbage bags that form part of lower Manhattan’s landscape. I often stop and take note of the contours that envelop our waste.
For the Battery, I propose a chair that is ductile, light, recyclable, sustainable and has the spirit of solidarity.
A bag that could acquire a shape from our body in different postures and for different functions and for its creation, to utilize much of what constitutes the heaps of waste.
